Molfetta boasts of an ancient tradition of shipwrights who have crafted wooden vessels of all shapes and sizes in its shipyards. The slipway, designed by Corrado de Judicibus in 1880 was built on the beach of La Maddalena, and you can still find the shipyards here today. In the first half of the Twentieth Century, the shipyard focused on building wooden fishing vessels and small rowboats and sailboats, such as paranze (trawlers) and trabaccoli (fishing luggers). Today the shipyards are involved in the construction of metal sea vessels, the restoration of wooden boats and construction of custom-made furnishings for sea vessels. It blends the tradition of the shipwrights, experienced and skilled carpenters, with that of blacksmiths and designers who work on the plans of skilled marine engineers.
