The Ospedale dei Crociati [Hospital of the Crusaders], located near the Basilica della Madonna dei Martiri [Basilica of Our Lady of Martyrs] was implemented by Ruggero Borsa, the Duke of Calabria and Apulia, in the eleventh century to host pilgrims that from East to West visited the most important places of Christendom in the Middle Ages. It’s a parallelepiped with two entrances, one on the Eastern side and the other on the Northern side. It is divided into three pars by two rows of pillars on which rest the arches. On the walls, there are small niches that allow guests to store the objects used for traveling. There are many crosses carved in the stone and reflecting the passage of pilgrims, who turned the Ospedale dei Crociati [Hospital of the Crusaders] into a pre-Romanesque architectural jewel without being a place of worship.
