PULO is a karst sinkhole that is 30 m deep with a 170 m diameter and a perimeter of over 600 m. The site is 2 km away from the city. It was inhabited since the Neolithic age, as evidenced by the archaeological findings discovered on the upper plateau, at the bottom of the hole and in the many caves of its walls. In the sixteenth century, the Capuchin monks settled here and built a convent. The discovery of the presence of saltpeter, an important element of gunpowder, in the eighteenth century resulted in the implementation of a factory at the service of the Bourbons of Naples. Today, the site is a diversified subject of study for its exceptional biodiversity as well as for its geological and archaeological nature of the utmost importance.
